Bishop Stanton came to our closing weekend and spent time with the youth, really listening to the kids and engaging them. My son’s left camp feeling like they were important to the church and had been heard. Another time our church was in a search for a new priest and Bishop Stanton took the time to come to a vestery meeting and help us with our process when we were feeling frustrated and stuck. It’s a great diocese with the potential to become greater,” Bishop Stanton said. “It’s time for new eyes and new ideas.”Consecrated in 1993, Bishop Stanton arrived at an unstable time for the Episcopal Church. Factions disagreed over the ordination of women, the ordination of openly gay clergy and same sex marriages.His first month in office, during the Diocesan Convention, Bishop Stanton aimed to return harmony to the ranks by asking everyone to arrive in work clothes. Together they constructed two Habitat For Humanity houses, while at the same time hammering out the framework for relationships and trust.“I wanted to focus on ministry,” said Bishop Stanton as he reflected on his early days at the diocese. “We can be very different in theology, but we can work together for good. We needed to enlarge the vision,” he said.An active leader beyond the diocesan footprint, he also became a notable figure on the national scene. His emergence as point man for conservatism in the Episcopal Church catapulted Bishop Stanton into the limelight resulting in interviews with media outlets such as 60 Minutes, Newsweek and the Associated Press, to name a few.“Bishop Stanton was a leader in the orthodox movement,” Dean Neil Michell said. “He will be remembered as a catalyst in the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion to maintain fidelity to the apostolic faith. He drew people together as the theological voice for those who did not want to see the historical documents and practice of the church eroded.”National media portrayed Bishop Stanton to be a stoic conservative leader with a public persona that those who knew him well say didn’t accurately match the man. Articles often characterized the bishop as a polarizing force while his actions in the diocesan theater showed him to be a skillful steward of unity.The Church went through a difficult period when it consecrated its first openly gay bishop, causing many parishes to leave for another Anglican jurisdiction, said Father Mike Michie, vicar at St. Andrew’s in McKinney. When some churches left the diocese, it hurt financially and lowered moral.“His chief legacy will be how he kept the diocese together through the difficult period when churches left and others wanted to leave. He really shepherded us through that time in history in a wonderful way,” Father Michie said. “If you look at us now, we are a strong diocese, we are together, we are growing and we pay our bills. A lesser leader would not be able to weather that storm.”While the national instability of the Episcopal Church played an important role defining Bishop Stanton’s tenure, to many in the diocese his biggest contribution came from his strategic plan.The strategy called for examining and evaluating every program in the diocese, and realigning resources to allow for stronger focus on church planting, youth programs, world mission and leadership development.“The strategic planning process was his signature achievement,” Dean Michell said. “So much came out of it.”For example, the diocese created a Church Planting Commission and provided seed money to establish successful programs. This resulted in several new churches, including four in the northern suburbs of the diocese, ethnically diverse urban churches in Dallas, and yet another in the more rural outpost of Wiley.One of these churches, St. Philip’s in Frisco, has grown to 700 in attendance at weekend services. “We have planted more churches than any other diocese,” said Father Clay Lein, rector at St. Philip’s. “We’ve been able to grow our ministry because of his leadership as our bishop. We would not exist if it wasn’t for his vision.”Bishop Stanton’s church growth efforts were an astute reaction to demographic changes, Bishop Suffragan Paul Lambert said. “Church planting is the lifeblood of any diocese. For many years we were behind the curve on that and now we are up to speed.”Building new churches in the diocese wasn’t Bishop Stanton’s only strategy for growth. He also focused on development of young Christians. For starters, he increased the number of youth ministers in the diocese by encouraging those churches that had part-time youth ministers to make them full-time and nudging churches with no youth minister to hire part-time ministers. He used diocese grants to make it happen.Additionally, the diocese acquired Camp All Saints on Lake Texoma, to provide summer camp and other opportunities for youth and schools.“You can provide more education and formation of young Christians during a week of camp than you can in a year or more of Sunday school, because they are living in community,” Bishop Stanton said. “Camp was a place where I met God and heard God’s call. It really was home for me when I was young.”The bishop’s vision for a camp is part of his overall philosophy of identifying and raising leaders, Bishop Lambert said. “That’s where many young people commit to a relationship with Jesus Christ and the Church.”While the camp served as part of his domestic mission efforts, Bishop Stanton also encouraged churches to engage globally. Those efforts have included mission outreach to Africa, Belize, and South America to name a few.“He had a heart for mission of the church in its largest sense, and like the first bishop of the Diocese of Dallas, Alexander Garrett, he thought mission should be out in the world,” noted Bishop Lambert.In preparing for the Lambeth Conference of 1998, Bishop Stanton invited 50 bishops to Dallas from around the world to build bonds of trust by study, prayer and discussion of common concerns. The bishops also became familiar with the legislative rules of the Conference so they could actively represent themselves in the future.Teaching others to lead is another Bishop Stanton trademark, most notably in the formation of the Stanton Center, a school for laity and those preparing to be deacons.“It’s a great resource for those who want to train for ministry in their local church, Father Michie said. “There are great classes to be had in biblical studies. Sometimes, Sunday school isn’t enough and people want a more academic route to their studies.”Part of this legacy includes heavy focus on training leaders whether it is deacons, youth ministers, priests or other bishops. He also helped establish the Cranmer Institute, a center for Anglican studies at Southern Methodist University.He furthered women’s ordination in the diocese without alienating parishes and splitting the diocese, Dean Michell said. He also championed deacons and made the diocese a model for others to follow. He loved to nurture priests to become confident, strong leaders in their own right.“He was the reason I wanted to plant a church here,” Father Michie said. “He always trusted me as a leader of the church and his confidence helped me. He’s done a great job of merging his intellect with his faith and that is something I want to emulate more.”Father Lein agreed that Bishop Stanton was a role model and said he cherished him as a mentor, “He has the willingness to empower people and give them permission to do the ministry God has called them to do. He empowers people and it makes a difference.”When asked about his favorite accomplishments over the years, Bishop Stanton, says there are many, but noted that he fondly remembers the time he went to every parish and mission on a “listening tour” to take the pulse of the diocese.“I had a lot of surprises,” he said. “The rural churches were much wiser. They lived with a lot of diversity issues but they managed to minister to each other, support each other and thrive without action of conventions. My successor needs to pay attention to what’s going on in the rural church. They are not big in numbers or money but they are big on Christian life and witness.”For retirement, Bishop Stanton plans to spend time with his two children, their spouses and five grandchildren. He wants to archive family photos for future generations, travel domestically, teach theology at the Cranmer Institute and Stanton Center, and write.His legacy will be looked back on fondly over the years, said Dean Michell. “He will be remembered as a Bishop-scholar, as a leader in the Episcopal Church and Anglican Communion, and as a larger than life figure.”Bishop Stanton is not a man who seeks fussy attention or notoriety, but instead prefers to shine the light on others. Sitting in an easy-chair in his diocesan office he deflects questions about himself to instead thank others. Most notably, he thanks the people of the diocese for making his job easier.“The people here are very optimistic and have a can-do spirit. Rarely will someone throw cold water on an idea,” he said. “They are open and that’s what I love about them. They are eager for the challenge and rise to the occasion. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, this is “a big old fish.”In late December, a fisherman caught a massive Warsaw-grouper near southwest Florida. Now, biologists from Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Research Institute have determined that this is one truly impressive catch.According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the angler landed a Warsaw Grouper weighing a whopping 350 pounds.The big catch happened in December with a hook and line in roughly 600 feet of water.Biologists with the FWC Research Institute estimate the fish is 50 years old.Warsaw groupers can grow to nearly eight feet long and can weigh up to nearly 600 pounds.The largest ever caught in Florida weighed nearly 440 pounds.While the FWC appears to be excited about this particular catch, they don’t promote fishermen targeting these fish. According to them, the “status of the population in the Gulf is unknown.”

What’s so big about walking upright? A single birth defect in a human ancestor 21 million years ago could have made it all possible, according to Dr. Aaron Filler (Cedars Sinai Medical Center), a specialist in the spine. According to EurekAlert, he proposes that in the “hominiform hominoid” Morotopithecus, a sibling was born with its horizontal septum transposed behind the lumbar region of the spine. This would have made its normal knuckle-walking gait inefficient. The child must have stood upright for relief. “Any mammal with this set of changes would only be comfortable standing upright,” he said. “I would envision this malformed young hominiform – the first true ancestral human – as standing upright from a young age while its siblings walked around on all fours.”According to the article, this idea “greatly demotes the importance of the bipedalism of Australopithecus species such as Lucy,” because walking upright was already old hat by then. In fact, the septum pattern found in his assumed upright-walking hominoids is as old as some invertebrates. Filler seems to be proposing upright posture not for any particular functional reason but as a mistake. “From an embryological point of view,” he remarked, “what took place is literally breathtaking.”So the Ugly Duckling of an early hominoid family found a sweetheart with the same birth defect and the two lived happily ever after, having lots of children that became medical doctors and philosophers. He’s right; for a story devoid of sense or evidence, this one is literally breathtaking. 7 January 2014 A new hotel is to be built this year at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, the popular tourist destination said in a statement on Monday. The hotel will be “a mid-market, internationally branded hotel”, the statement said. David Green, chief executive of the V&A Waterfront, said: “Given the growth in domestic, business and leisure tourism, coupled with consistent growth in the occupancy at our current hotels over the past 18 months, we believe the opportunity exists for a mid-market hotel development.” Tourism to Cape Town is expected to grow at between 4% and 5% in 2014, according to figures from Cape Town Tourism. The United Nations World Travel Organisation has estimated a global year-on year increase of 3.3% a year until 2030. For Cape Town, the V&A says, the majority of source markets are European, while the biggest growth market is Latin America. The Waterfront says it receives more than 24-million visitors a year, and has contributed almost R200-billion to South Africa’s gross domestic product (GDP) in the past 10 years.Occupancy The One & Only was the last hotel built at the Waterfront in 2009. The Queen Victoria is the newest hotel, the result of a refurbishment of an existing building in 2011. The V&A has six five-star hotels, two four-star hotels and two three-star hotels. Within Cape Town, there are 24 five-star, 54 four-star and 20 three-star hotels. An independent report commissioned by the V&A Waterfront shows that revenue per available room (RevPAR) of Waterfront hotels was higher than those of the surrounding areas, Green said. According to a report by consultants Wilkofsky Gruen Associates quoted by Green, a snapshot of the South African hotel sector’s performance over the period January to June 2013 reflects sustained growth with RevPAR (revenue per available room) increasing by 13.1% on a national aggregated basis. “Healthy growth” of 12.4% was experienced at three- and four-star hotels, while five-star hotels reflected an “impressive” 15.6% growth. Cape Town’s growth in this sector was pegged at 16.2%. Kamil Abdul-Karrim, MD of Pam Golding Tourism and Hospitality Consulting, said the South African hotel industry had come through its worst trading cycle – from the last quarter of 2008 to the third quarter of 2011 – and is now beginning to reflect sustainable signs of recovery with the last three quarters reflecting year-on-year growth. ConclusionThe time you spend at work is no indication of productivity. Neither is the number of dials you make per hour or day. The number of face-to-face sales calls or ear-to-ear sales calls or video face to video face sales calls are also no measurement of productivity. They are activity, and not all activity produces the right outcomes. You can have meetings in which nothing is accomplished. They may even be necessary, but that does not mean that any initiative was advanced.Productivity is the measurement of the outcomes you create divided by the time and energy you invest in those outcomes. Time and energy invested in activities that do not produce an outcome do not mean that you were productive. This is true even when the non-productive activities are necessary. If you are vigilant and honest with yourself about the way you spend your time and can cut out or minimize the unnecessary tasks, you will become much better at focusing your time and energy on producing awesome outcomes. A lot of people mistake being busy for being productive. You might get to cross 15 things off your To-Do List, but unless these items are directly related to sales, chances are you are being incredibly unproductive. Productivity is a measurement of the progress you are making on important outcomes. You can say “yes” to all kinds of work and projects that consume your time and energy and while interesting, they do nothing to move you ahead toward your major initiatives or goals.Being more productive requires a broader shift in thinking. It can be tough to improve your productivity overnight but there are some simple steps you can take to meaningfully boost productivity over time. Some of these strategies require lifestyle changes, while others require getting more organized and comparing your progress against peers. Read up on these tips to help you build a foundation for killer productivity.Set Yourself Up For SuccessYou can’t have a great day without a little preparation the night before. Every night I set the coffee pot to go off 10 minutes before I wake up. I also get water bottles ready if I am running in the morning. I start the day in the office with mindfulness meditation, a journal entry and writing. Then I set to work with a cup of coffee and a blank page on my computer.Everyone has different daily routines. But the more you can do to get your day in order before you are up and running, the faster you will get to work and the more you will accomplish. You set the tone for your whole day during the very first few hours. Review your calendar for the next day the night before so you know what to expect. It only takes a few minutes but it’s important to know what you’re doing and where you have space to fit in last-minute tasks that pop up. Make sure you are prepared for meetings and commitments you have planned.It’s also important to write down your priorities or To-Do list – this can help you achieve three or four major outcomes each day. You can try to do this on a weekly basis, but if you’re really staying busy, chances are you will want to revisit your schedule and renegotiate commitments on a daily basis. Review the list and schedule time to do the real work – the proactive, intentional stuff, not the reactive stuff like responding to emails, answering calls, etc. Doing this work the night before lets you do purposeful work starting right at the beginning of your day.Don’t Skimp on SleepGetting a full night of sleep is critical to boosting productivity. The average person needs at least 7 hours of sleep each night and some need even more than that. Figure out how many hours of sleep you need to function most effectively and set a “cut off” time for when you need to go to bed every night. You can even set that cutoff time on your smartphone so you get an alert when it’s time to get some sleep. It’s also important to detach from electronics an hour or two before bed. Studies show that the light emitted from electronics can disrupt your natural sleep rhythms. Instead of checking email or watching TV, try a book or other activities. Maybe get some exercise or use that time to pursue your hobbies. Getting enough sleep may require a significant change in your daily habits. When you set a time to get out of bed, stick to it. People that keep hitting the snooze alarm just come to work feeling groggy and lethargic. You want to pick a wake up time when you can jump out of bed and start your day.Narrow Your FocusBeing productive is about prioritizing your top goals and narrowing your focus. You have to carefully select what is important in your day and eliminate the things that aren’t adding up to anything so you know you are spending your time wisely. A successful day is not just one where you are so busy you don’t have time to sit down – it’s a day where you make progress on the things that are the most important.Keeping a time journal is a great way to take measurements and make adjustments. Write down everything you do from the time you wake up until you go to sleep. If you do this for a few days in a row, you will see exactly how much time you are wasting in between tasks or on tasks that just aren’t helping you stay productive. This is anything from lying in bed scrolling through social media to spending an hour on the phone talking through someone else’s issues.Raise your standards by looking at what you really do and how little of it is related to the outcomes you want to produce. This will create the awareness you need to lead to positive change. Decide and act on the idea that you are going to prioritize what is most important and is moving you closer to your goals.Set Long-Term GoalsYou can’t be productive unless you have broader overarching targets to guide your efforts. Long-term goals help you frame your thoughts and give you a roadmap for success. The ideal timeframe for these goals is 1-3 years, but figure out what works best for you. This process might involve really taking the time to consider what kind of personal growth is important to you. Where do you want to be at the end of those three years? Think about what promotion you’re gunning for or what milestones you want to hit, then think tactically. The next step is figuring out the short-term goals that will get you there.Set Short-Term GoalsShort-term goals are goals over the next few days or months that can help you reach your long-term goals. These goals might include developing a certain skill, learning more about the broader company, or attending conferences to network with peers. It’s not enough to just write down a few short-term goals. Make sure to evaluate your progress at the end of the week to make sure you’re on the right track. Think about what you did well and what you could have done better; there might be some lessons learned that you haven’t considered. Short-term goals are the tactical steps you need to take to reach your long-term goals and require a lot more detail. Depending on your progress towards your short-term goals, you might find it necessary to adapt your long-term goals. Setting goals, striving for them, and reaching them is an iterative process that requires periodic reflection.Set Three 90-Minute BlocksIt’s not enough to just have goals for each day. You need to think about the little steps you’re going to take to get there. Break the day into 90 minute blocks of time (or another interval) and decide what work you want to accomplish in each particular block. This ensures you don’t have long stretches of time without a specific focus. Blocking time doesn’t mean you have to schedule your entire day with no room for last-minute meetings or other work that arises. It just means you need to have a plan and that you work that plan as best you can.If you schedule three 90-minute blocks of time each day for your most important work, you’ll find you get more important work done, the work is higher quality and you finish your tasks faster than you would have if you stretched them out throughout the day.Also, these three blocks account for just 4.5 of the 24 hours in your day. That leaves you plenty of time to be reactive or responsive to other things that come up. You are simply using about half of your work day to protect yourself from distractions and small work that doesn’t move you closer to your goals.Use the first 90-minute block (say between 8am and 9:30am) to finish the most important task you need to complete. This is often the LAST thing you will want to do first thing in the morning but that’s even more reason why you should. Then no matter what else happens in the day you will have been productive and completed an important task. See how it works?Using the second block in the late morning to work on your second most important task boosts the odds of you being doubly productive. Then you can take a break around noon to reenergize and refuel. Even if your day ended at this point you still will have accomplished more than most of your peers!Having a third 90-minute block in the afternoon is a good chance to bang away at one of the important projects you haven’t yet finished or start a new task. If you’re interrupted by something urgent, and we all will be on some days, don’t worry about it. Just get back to it as soon as possible and try to devote the full 90 minutes to it even if it is broken up.Be Aware of Demands on Your TimeWhen you create your workday budget, one of the most important things to do is to set periods of time when you won’t check your phone or email. An email is a significant demand on your time and so is a phone call or text. It might not sound like a heavy burden in terms of taxing your brain or energy, but it does require you to step outside of your current task and consider what to do, how to respond, etc. These interruptions are demands on your time without your consent.Setting limited windows to check messages can stop you from constantly switching your attention from projects to responding to routine emails. Setting aside these blocks of time give you a chance to focus on one specific task and get it done faster.It’s often impossible to ignore demands on your time, but you can bundle them together so you can control your focus and attention. If you landed your dream client, you want to be available to them when they call, text or email you because they are in need of your help. You want to honor your commitment to them but also make sure that every little distraction doesn’t end up keeping you from accomplishing anything with your day.Double Activity or Increase EffectivenessWhat if your sales results are off by 50%? You’re only producing half of your number. In order to close that gap, you can do one of two things: Double your activity or Increase Your Effectiveness.Doubling your activity begins with the assumption that sales is just a numbers game. There is nothing but activity and more activity leads to more opportunities which leads to more wins and so on. Doubling your prospecting efforts might not be a bad plan for those who aren’t doing enough to create the results they need. However, only increasing your activity level doesn’t account for all the other things that one could be doing to improve their sales results.Increasing your effectiveness assumes that better results will happen when the sales force is more effective and sales teams aren’t struggling as much. This involves training, development and coaching that help your ability to target dream clients and go after bigger opportunities. It requires more of a time investment but also improves win rates and creates a higher percentage of wins than just increasing activity alone.Some people need more activity for better results and others need to get more effective at what they are doing. Implementing both strategies at once means more activity as well as new mindsets and skills – usually a winning combination.BenchmarkOnce you’ve got that personal feedback, it’s time to benchmark with counterparts inside and outside your company. It’s time to see how you stack up against the competition. Compare your productivity to peers you admire. Those comparisons are another objective way to evaluate your performance. Figure out exactly what metrics are going to be important when benchmarking. Is it sales growth? Number of new accounts opened? Invitations to speaking engagements? Any metrics can be valuable if they are relevant and easily measurable. Also look at what those people are doing to boost their productivity. Maybe they spend more time networking and getting to know people across the company. They might be more aggressive about finding ways to work smarter instead of harder. Observe your peers and if possible, have a chat; you might learn some new strategies to boost your productivity. Essential Reading!
