Champions League: Who needs what in final round

first_imgGroup AThe only thing left to play for is first place in the group. A win for Atletico in Bruges will see the Spaniards finish top but anything else will open the door for Dortmund if they win in Monaco.Qualified: Atletico Madrid, Borussia DortmundEuropa League: Club BruggeGroup BBarcelona have already qualified as group winners but could still influence who joins them in the last 16. If Tottenham win at the Camp Nou on Tuesday they will go through on one condition. They must match the result of Inter Milan, who host the already-eliminated PSV Eindhoven.Qualified: BarcelonaGroup CThis is the most intriguing group of all with Napoli, Paris Saint Germain and Liverpool all in with a chance of qualifying.Napoli currently top the group and need just a point from their trip to Anfield to secure their passage. If that happens then PSG would also go through, although the French side can guarantee their own progress with a win in Belgrade whatever the result at Anfield.Liverpool, on the other hand, have to beat Napoli 1-0 or by two clear goals to be sure of qualifying. If Napoli lose, they could still go through if PSG lose in Belgrade.Group D2004 champions Porto have qualified as group winners with Schalke joining them in the draw. The Europa League spot will go to Galatasaray if they can beat Porto in Istanbul. Failure to do that means Lokomotiv Moscow could jump in if they win in Germany.Qualified: Porto, SchalkeGroup EBayern Munich head to Amsterdam to face Ajax in the final round knowing a draw will be enough for the Germans to top the group. Both sides have already qualified while Benfica are assured of moving into the Europa League.AEK Athens, meanwhile, will hope to score their first point of the tournament.Qualified: Bayern Munich, AjaxEuropa League: BenficaGroup FManchester City have already qualified and need just a point from their home tie against Hoffenheim to secure top spot. The focus will be on what happens in Kiev where Shakhtar Donetsk must beat visitors Lyon to leapfrog the French side for second spot.Lyon will top the group if they win and City lose, a combination which would see Hoffenheim squeeze past Shakhtar for the Europa League spot.Qualified: Manchester CityGroup GDefending champions Real Madrid are through as group winners with Roma hanging on their coat-tails. Viktoria Plzen, away in Rome, need to match CSKA Moscow’s result in Madrid to reach the Europa League.Qualified: Real Madrid, RomaGroup HJuventus and Manchester United have already stamped their tickets for the knockout stage, the only question being which will finish top of the group.Juve are in pole position as a win at Young Boys would make the United result irrelevant. But if Juve slip up in Berne, Joe Mourinho’s side will top the group with a victory in Valencia.Qualified: Juventus, Manchester UnitedEuropa League: Valencia0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today) 0Shares0000Liverpool v Napoli is one of the key fixtures in this week’s final round of Champions League group games. © AFP/File / Filippo MONTEFORTEPARIS, France, Dec 10 – The Champions League goes into its final round of group games this week with 12 teams already assured of featuring in the last 16 and seven others battling for the remaining four places. Here, AFP Sports looks at what remains at stake:last_img read more

Mbeki, Bush cement relations

first_img10 July 2003A toast between President Thabo Mbeki and visiting US President George W Bush, proposed by the former, sealed a relationship between the two countries at a luncheon hosted by Mbeki for about 250 guests in Pretoria on Wednesday.Mbeki said the Americans had offered their unwavering support to South Africa during the struggle era and during the post-democratic dispensation to overcome the challenges it faced.“As the eminent representative of such a people, Mr President, we could not but receive you as a friend and an honoured guest,” Mbeki told Bush.A few hours before the luncheon, the two leaders held discussions on political, economic and social issues. These included conflict resolution on the continent, the post-war Iraq, the Zimbabwean crisis, HIV-Aids, and trade relations.Addressing the media after the meeting, Mbeki said his government was pleased by the commitment shown by the US to assist both South Africa and the continent. “The visit will result in strengthened bilateral relations and strengthened cooperation to meet these and other challenges that we face together,” he said.In response, Bush said he appreciated the relationship between the two administrations, describing it as vital. “Mr President, I want to thank you for making it a vital relationship,” he said, adding that the partnership could help extend democracy, free markets and transparency across Africa. On Zimbabwe, Bush said the US would encourage the South African government to continue engaging the warring parties in that country, adding that Pretoria and Washington shared the same objectives on the manner in which the political, economic and social turmoil in Zimbabwe could be resolved.“I have no intention of second-guessing [Mbeki’s] tactics. We want the same outcome,” Bush said. “Mbeki is the point man in this important subject, he is working very hard and is in touch with the parties involved, and the US supports him in his efforts.”Mbeki assured Bush that the warring factions in Zimbabwe – the government and the opposition Movement for Democratic Change – were engaged in talks to solve the problems in that country.Mbeke reiterated, however, that the principal responsibility for the resolution of those challenges lay with the Zimbabweans themselves. “It is very important that they should move forward with urgency to find resolutions to these questions,” Mbeki said.Bush also lauded efforts by Pretoria to forge peace elsewhere on the continent, particularly in Burundi and the Democratic Republic of Congo. He said the US was heartened by South Africa’s decision to increase its HIV-Aids budget, reiterating that his administration would provide $15-billion to Africa in the next five years to combat the disease.“Trade is the key to Africa’s economic future. The African Growth and Opportunities Act is creating jobs and stimulating investment across the continent,” Bush said.Bush arrived in South Africa on Tuesday from Senegal as part of a five-nation tour of the continent. He leaves for Botswana on Thursday, from where he will head for Uganda and Nigeria before returning to the US.Source: BuaNewslast_img read more

SAA, Air Canada in code share plan

first_img12 December 2012 South African Airways (SAA) and Air Canada signed a code share agreement on Monday, making it easier for passengers to travel between the two countries. Passengers are now able to book a single itinerary when connecting between the carriers in London, as well as benefit from reciprocal frequent flyer miles accumulation or redemption, and lounge access for eligible customers through both airlines’ membership of Star Alliance. SAA and Air Canada also received approval from the United States last week to add connections through New York. “We look forward to welcoming Air Canada’s customers to our award-winning service and extensive route network,” SAA’s commercial acting general manager, Manoj Papa, said in a statement. “This code share agreement represents new and seamless travel options between two world-class airlines with a deep knowledge of their respective markets. “Travellers based in southern Africa and Canada will benefit greatly from the convenient travel choices now open to them, thereby increasing travel between the two regions,” he said. SAA will code share on Air Canada-operated flights between London and Vancouver, London and Toronto and New York’s John F Kennedy airport and Toronto. Air Canada will code share on SAA-operated flights between London and Johannesburg, New York and Johannesburg and Johannesburg and Cape Town. “With flights coordinated to minimise connection times, plus the simplicity of a single itinerary, it will be easier than ever to fly between Canada and South Africa,” said Air Canada’s vice-president of alliances, international operations and regulatory Affairs, Yves Dufresne. Aus firms fast-tracks SA offshore gas project

first_img5 February 2014Australian-listed company Sunbird Energy is fast-tracking the development of the Ibhubesi gas project off South Africa’s west coast, which could pave the way for a multi-billion rand investment that would significantly boost the country’s gas-to-electricity generation capacity.According to Business Day, Sunbird CEO Will Barker told delegates at the African Mining Indaba in Cape Town on Tuesday that the company aimed to complete the preliminary field development plan in the first half of this year and get the front-end engineering and design studies for the project under way.Sunbird Energy received government approval for the acquisition of the Ibhubesi gas project last October, establishing it as the operator of South Africa’s largest and most advanced undeveloped gas field with a 76% working interest, with national oil company PetroSA holding the remaining 24% of the licence. In December, Sunbird signed a memorandum of understanding with South African state power company Eskom to jointly investigate supplying gas from Ibhubesi to Eskom’s 1 300 megawatt Ankerlig power station, to replace the plant’s current high-cost diesel feed stock.Eskom is also currently developing plans to convert Ankerlig from an open cycle gas turbine to a closed cycle gas turbine plant, so that it can run on gas.Eskom spokesman Andrew Etzinger told Business Day on Tuesday that such a conversion was attractive as it would double the plant’s efficiency.“No hard decisions have been made, but we are looking at the feasibility of the conversion of the plant, with the important parameters of the gas price and its availability”, Etzinger told Business Day. “It’s early days, but it’s a good opportunity.”Sunbird Energy chairman Kerwin Rana, in a statement following the signing of the memorandum of understanding in December, said his company was “delighted to be working with Eskom to progress this nationally significant project of domestic gas supply for South Africa.“Additionally, we acknowledge the support of our joint venture partner in the project PetroSA (24%), the national oil company of South Africa, as well as our South African black empowerment partner Umbono Capital, in bringing these discussions to this important stage.”SAinfo reporterlast_img read more
