Photo courtesy of Edit Varga Students in the Notre Dame Handbell Choir pose for a photo in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.Today, the choir features over five octaves of handbells and two groups of performers, the higher-level Bronze ensemble and the beginners’ Copper ensemble, she said.Karen Schneider-Kirner, director of the handbell choir, said the group primarily performs liturgical music for on-campus religious services, including at the 11:45 a.m. Basilica mass, the Sunday night Vespers and the vigil masses. The group also goes on tour once a semester, she said.In addition to celebrating the choir’s 30th anniversary, Fugate said the concert will also commemorate Schneider-Kirner’s 20th year directing the ensembles. She said several alumni will be returning to perform.“People who have rang with us within the last 30 years are also going to be able to get to ring some favorites for the concert,” she said.Schneider-Kirner said the concert will include mainly sacred music but also a piece of her own composition entitled “Ring Out Your Joy.”“Another, more proper church piece that we’re playing is an arrangement of a Palestrina song, who was an early Catholic composer,” Fugate said.Freshman Brittany Cahill, who plays in the Coppers ensemble, said she enjoys performing in the choir because of the unique tone of handbell music.“I love the way it sounds,” she said.Schneider-Kirner said handbell performance employs several techniques that go beyond traditional bell-ringing.“A lot of the pieces sort of highlight the percussive nature of handbells,” Schneider-Kirner said. “Often you play them with mallets [or] by thumping them into the table.”She said that many of the more advanced pieces to be featured demand considerable coordination, some even requiring four bells in-hand.“It shows how talented [the performers] are, to be able to keep all the bells straight,” she said.Schneider-Kirner said the concert will include several guest performers for additional vocal and instrumental accompaniment.“We have some vocalists from the folk choir, [and] organist Patrick Kronner will be joining us,” she said. “We’ll also have a group of singers who’ll highlight some of the hymn tunes that our other pieces are based on.”The handbells, vocalists and instrumentalists blend well together, she said, and work to complement one another musically.“The diversity of handbells can be combined beautifully with all different types of instruments,” she said.Schneider-Kirner said she hopes the concert helps acquaint students with the handbell choir and the musical opportunities the group offers.“We want to let students know that we’re out there,” she said.Cahill said she looks forward to hearing the efforts of the ensembles, vocalists and instrumentalists come together.“I hope that people just have a very peaceful experience,” she said. “It’s just this unexpected joy when you hear [the bells].”Schneider-Kirner said playing handbells is “very uplifting.”“We always want to use our music to draw people closer to God, but also just to offer a really beautiful, spirited evening of song,” she said.Tags: Handbell Choir To commemorate its 30th anniversary, the Notre Dame Handbell Choir will host an ensemble concert Saturday at 8 p.m. in the Basilica of the Sacred Heart. The concert is free and open to all.Sophomore Katherine Fugate, vice president of the handbell choir, said the group was first founded in 1988 when Campus Ministry purchased a small set of handbells.“Over the years, we’ve really tried to expand,” she said.

Have you ever dreamt of a place where clear, blue skies are accented by pristine lakes and snow-covered mountains? Perhaps a place where crisp, mountain air pours down from 12,000 feet to cool off a hot summer day? Imagine wetland bogs above 9,000 feet harnessing abundant wildlife and groves of aspen trees that darken the forest floor. The early morning air is chilly, but quickly warmed by the rising sun. If you have been searching for such a place, look no further. Frisco, Colo., is the answer. PlayNo matter what means of recreation you wish to pursue, Frisco has it. Frisco is surrounded by National Forest lands on three sides and Summit County is comprised of 75 percent public lands! You can flatwater SUP on Dillon Lake, mountain bike the Peaks Trail, and access the high country in the same day.The Peaks Trail is truly a gem of the region and can literally be accessed from downtown Frisco. By following the Peaks Trail you can hike, bike, or run to Breckenridge in 9 miles and then, either, ride or run back for a total of 18 miles or catch the bus in Breck, and head back to Frisco. The Peaks Trail also runs congruently with the Colorado Trail (CT) and Continental Divide Trail (CDT) for about a mile. Break off of the Peaks Trail in either direction on the CT/CDT and the possibilities are endless.A popular trek on foot or by bike would be to leave Frisco, hike or ride about 4 miles on the Peaks Trail until the CT/CDT breaks off towards Copper Mountain. Follow the CT/CDT for another 9 miles up and over the Ten Mile Range between Peaks 5 and 6 for outstanding views of Copper Peak and the heart of the Rockies. The last 4 miles are a steep descent to Copper Mountain Ski Resort. You can catch either take the concrete path from Copper back to Frisco, turn around and do what you just did again, or catch the bus from Copper back to Frisco. StaySince we don’t typically stay at motel/hotel type accommodations, we can only list them as any Google search would. We’ll leave that to you to research. However, if you are interested in primitive camping down a long bumpy dirt road then you’ve come to the right place. About 5 miles outside of Frisco sits CR 1000, one of the prettiest, most comfortable nights of sleep you could ever bargain for. And actually, they’ll be no bargaining required because the primitive sights are free! You can easily access CR 1000 from Summit Blvd. Be cautious at first because the first mile shares a paved bike path before breaking off to the left taking you up closer to Rainbow Lake. From the Rainbow Lake trailhead primitive camping spots are littered through out the road. It’s important to remember the further up the road you go, the steeper and more unforgiving the travelling becomes. There are sites that are easy to access and enjoy. Please be respectful of the place, pack out all trash, and remember that it’s because of proper camping ethics that we all have the privilege to stay here. Oh, and another thing. The Peaks Trail runs right along CR 1000 for about 1.5 miles for easy access to some of Colorado’s most beautiful backcountry access. EatThere are tons of places to eat in Frisco. We would have to highly recommend finding eats on Main Street for the sure beauty you will find there. One could start their day by heading to Rocky Mountain Coffee Roasters. Great coffee and, of course, Wi-Fi to use. Vinny’s Restaurant has a fine mix of farm-fresh ingredients and pub food served in a relaxing environment. Looking for wood-fired pizza after a stout ride or run? Head to Boatyard American Grill and sit out on the patio. The patio is right on Main Street and the food is awesome.
New Delhi: The ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 is approaching the business end. There is only one week left of the league games and there is a tough fight for the semi-finals. Australia’s victory over England in Lord’s has made them the first team to enter the semi-final. The five-time champions displayed their mettle and will now be aiming to top the group by winning their last two games against New Zealand and South Africa. England’s loss, though, has opened up a massive opportunity for Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and even the West Indies, albeit mathematically. New Zealand and India are in a good position but they will be desperate to avoid a slip-up in their last few league games. With South Africa and Afghanistan being eliminated and with Australia already securing qualification for the semi-final, here is what the remaining teams need to do.New ZealandP – 6, W – 5, L – 0, N/R – 1, Points – 11Position in table: 2ndRemaining games: vs Pakistan (June 26), vs Australia (June 29), vs England (July 3)What they must do:A win in any of their three games will guarantee them a spot in the semi-final. If they beat Pakistan, then they seal the spot in the semi-final. If they lose their remaining games, they will have to hope Sri Lanka do not win two out of three games and that Bangladesh loses one game. They will be hoping Pakistan also does not win more than two games.IndiaP – 5, W – 4, L – 0, N/R – 1, Points – 9Position in table: 3rdRemaining games: vs West Indies (June 27), vs England (June 30), vs Bangladesh (July 2), vs Sri Lanka (July 6)What they must do:Virat Kohli’s side is in top form at the moment and they have played the least number of games. A win in two out of their remaining four games guarantees them a spot in the semi-final. However, if they win only one, then they will have to hope Sri Lanka do not win their remaining games and that Bangladesh does not win their remaining two games. If they lose all their games and England win one, Sri Lanka wins all and Bangladesh win two of their remaining games, Kohli’s side will be eliminated.EnglandP – 7, W – 4, L – 3, N/R – 0, Points – 8Position in table: 4thRemaining games: vs India (June 30), vs New Zealand (July 3)What they must do:England is the most vulnerable of the lot. If they lose their remaining games, they will be eliminated. They must win both games to secure qualification. If they win only one, they must hope Sri Lanka win only one out of their remaining three games and that Bangladesh wins only one game. They must also hope that Pakistan loses one game.BangladeshP – 7, W – 3, L – 3, N/R – 1, Points – 7Position in table: 5thRemaining games: vs India (July 2), vs Pakistan (July 5)What they must do:With England’s loss, Bangladesh has gotten a lifeline but their next opponents are difficult. They must win both their games to seal qualification. However, if they win one game, they will have to hope England lose to both New Zealand and India. They must also hope that Sri Lanka does not win more than one game and that Pakistan loses two out of their remaining three games. If they lose both, they will be eliminated.Sri LankaP – 6, W – 2, L – 2, N/R – 2, Points – 6Position in table: 6thRemaining games: vs South Africa (June 28), vs West Indies (July 1), vs India (July 6)What they must do:Sri Lanka was the team who threw the entire race for the semi-final wide open with a win against England in Leeds. They have to win their remaining games in order to seal a spot in the semi-final. If they win only two games, they must hope England lose their remaining games by a massive margin. If England wins one game, then it boils down to net run-rate. They must pray that Bangladesh does not win their remaining two games and that Pakistan wins only one out of three games. If they win only one game and that England or Bangladesh win a game, they will be eliminated.PakistanP – 6, W- 2, L – 3, N/R- 1, Points – 5 Position in table: 7thRemaining games: vs New Zealand (June 26), vs Afghanistan (June 29), vs Bangladesh (July 5)What they must do:For Pakistan, the equation is simple. They must win their remaining games. If they lose to New Zealand today, they will still not be eliminated. If they win two out of their three games, then they will have to hope England lose their remaining games and that Sri Lanka does not win more than one game. They will be hoping Bangladesh lose both their games. There is a possibility that if Pakistan wins all their games and that Australia, New Zealand lose one and India win all their games, there could be an India vs Pakistan semi-final.West IndiesP – 6, W – 1, L -4, N/R -1, Points – 3Position in table: 8thRemaining games: vs India (June 27), vs Sri Lanka (July 1), vs Afghanistan (July 4)What they must do:West Indies still have a mathematical chance. If they lose to India, they are out. If they win all their games, they must hope England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh loses all their games and that Pakistan does not win more than one game. West Indies have to win all three for such a scenario to arise. Australia is the only team to have sealed a semi-final spot in World Cup 2019.South Africa and Afghanistan are the only teams to be eliminated.England, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Pakistan and West Indies will be vying for the fourth spot. highlights For all the Latest Sports News News, ICC World Cup News, Download News Nation Android and iOS Mobile Apps.
