It’s part of a much larger infrastructure and transportation project along the already busy corridor. You could certainly call the location the epicenter of all the construction going on here: The widening of the freeway, the new bridge over it at Gilman Drive, and literally looming over all, one of the elevated guideways for the Mid-Coast Trolley extension– that in 2021 will connect the Border, South Bay, downtown and Old Town to the University. But our focus is on the bridge– because for the first time since the start of construction, commuters can see it’s design now that the metal and wooden supports have come off.Our story details how the bridge was included with all of the other work because it’s not directly related to the trolley and the two trolley stations being built on the campus, along with one at the nearby VA Medical Center. In meeting with the University, SANDAG and Caltrans officials went over the trolley project.  Great, said campus officials, but they added, in essence, as long as you’re going to have this huge construction footprint here, can you concurrently build a long-planned vehicle and pedestrian span over the I-5 connecting a campus separated by a freeway.SANDAG AND Caltrans signed off and the Gilman Bridge will be open in January of next year.Nine new stations will be constructed. Major construction work began in 2016, with service anticipated to begin in 2021. To learn more, visit click here.
