first_imgA Vancouver man who got lost while hunting elk near Mount St. Helens was located early Tuesday morning.Rolland Dall, 50, was in the area hunting with several friends, but he did not return to camp Monday night, according to the Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office. His friends called 911 at about 8 p.m. Search and Rescue Coordinator Sgt. Joe Reiss and seven volunteers responded to the area, about 4 miles southwest of Mount St. Helens, and used night-vision equipment to search for Dall alongside his hunting party, according to the sheriff’s office.Dall was located at 1 a.m. cold but unharmed, deputies said. When he had realized he didn’t know the way back to camp, Dall said he decided to “stay put,” a decision that the sheriff’s office is calling a wise one. He also was dressed for the weather and had rain gear with him.“Dall made the right decision that few people do when (they) realize they are lost: he chose to stay put,” Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Charlie Rosenzweig said in a press release. “We are thankful he was smart to make this decision. People who get lost need to stay where they are and do the best they can to keep themselves dry and safe.”last_img read more
