As a magistrate he had led the magisterial inquest into third Panamanian offshore company Egrant which lawyer Pawlu Lia ordered on behalf of his client Prime Minister Joseph Muscat and for which he had set the parameters. Mr Justice Bugeja had found no evidence to support the claim that Egrant was owned by Muscat or his wife Michelle Muscat. The main conclusions of the report, which amount to some 3% of the “voluminous” inquiry report were published in July 2018. However the full report remains unpublished.Bugeja’s promotion to a judge is also subject to a constitutional case filed by civil rights NGO Repubblika which is arguing that the recent appointments to the bench should be declared null and void until the recommendations put forward in the legal opinion by the Venice Commission are fully implemented.READ: Chief Justice will not recuse himself from judicial appointments caseIt is not known when the trial will start.WhatsApp SharePrintlast_img read more
